OUR CHEMICAL HEARTS BY KRYSTAL SUTHERLAND BOOK REVIEW!!!
Henry Page has never been in love. He fancies himself a hopeless romantic, but the slo-mo, heart palpitating, can’t-eat-can’t-sleep kind of love that he’s been hoping for just hasn’t been in the cards for him—at least not yet. Instead, he’s been happy to focus on his grades, on getting into a semi-decent college and finally becoming editor of his school newspaper. Then Grace Town walks into his first period class on the third Tuesday of senior year and he knows everything’s about to change.
Grace isn’t who Henry pictured as his dream girl—she walks with a cane, wears oversized boys’ clothes, and rarely seems to shower. But when Grace and Henry are both chosen to edit the school paper, he quickly finds himself falling for her. It’s obvious there’s something broken about Grace, but it seems to make her even more beautiful to Henry, and he wants nothing more than to help her put the pieces back together again. And yet, this isn’t your average story of boy meets girl. Krystal Sutherland’s brilliant debut is equal parts wit and heartbreak, a potent reminder of the bittersweet bliss that is first love.
This book was one of the most completely unique books I have read in a very long time!
The characters were all quirky and different and I think it was really refreshing to read all about the different characters that Krystal created and they really stuck in my head after I finished reading. Grace Town was probably my favourite character I have ever read about this year, her mysterious background really intrigued me and made me read the book in one sitting (no regrets).
The emotions that this book makes you feel are a rollar coaster. One minute you’re heart is in pain and breaking and then the next you’re dying laughing. This book is deep and has a very lovely meaning behind it however it was still an easy read to get through in the one sitting that I read it.
The writing of the story was beyond incredible, the fact this is Krystal’s first novel really makes me so excited and proud to see her grow and read her future works. It also makes me really proud that Krystal is an Australian author so the fact that this has Australian references that I understand is really heartwarming to me.
Overall, Our Chemical Hearts was a unique, fast paced and quirky read, I would really recommend this to those that love John Green (to be honest its heaps better than his books oOPS DONT HURT ME) and also to those that love quirky characters with a really deep and meaningful plot.
